KAMPALA - A traditional healer, sentenced to 15 years in jail for defiling a nine-year-old girl, has asked for a lenient jail term, saying he is now impotent.

Najja Ssebbango, 73, of Kikandwa village, Kakiri sub-county, was convicted of aggravated defilement by Judge Elizabeth Nahamya at Nakawa High Court.

Prosecution told court that during the months of September and November 2011, Najja regularly defiled the girl when she was taken to him to exorcise evil spirits that had reportedly attacked her.

The victim was taken to Najja by his father after learning through adverts that the elderly man could allegedly heal people tormented by evil spirits.

Najja asked the girl’s father to leave her with him for some time for the exorcisml.

Prosecution further told court that Najja told the victim that his medicine works well when delivered through sex.

The victim’s mother had passed away when she was younger.

The convict, who was arrested in November 2011, has been in Luzira Prisons for the last four years.

He amused court when he asked for a shorter sentence, arguing that he was too old and that he had become impotent.
