Nkumba University aims to promote education in business, arts, social sciences, sciences, technical, communication and cultural fields as well as stimulate the spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship.

The institution that began as a kindergarten in 1952 is now one of the largest private universities in East Africa.

The student population today stands at over 7000, and each year over 1000 matriculate with certificates and diplomas, degrees as well as postgraduate qualifications. The University has over 10,000 Alumni.

The six Schools of the University include: School of Business Administration; School of Education; School of Law and Institute of Criminal Justice; School of Industrial, Commercial Art and Design; School of Social Sciences; and, the School of Sciences.

The School of Law is the only one of its kind in the region offering programmes leading to the award of Bachelor of Criminal Justice as well as Diplomas in Criminal Justice. These are programmes suitable for members of the public as well as the Armed Forces such as the Police, Prisons and the Army.

It is nearly two years ago that the School Sciences commenced the teaching of Applied Sciences such as Biological and Health sciences, which is in line with government efforts to popularize Science and Technology Innovation (STI).

Nkumba University received its Charter in 2006 and the Charter enshrines the Vision, Mission as well as the mandate of the institution.

The Vision of the University is: “To be a center of Academic and Professional excellence.” The University mission is: “To provide an environment that enables the cultivation of competence, confidence, creativity and character in the academic, professional and social interactions.”

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

Nkumba University aims to promote education in business, arts, social sciences, sciences, technical, communication and cultural fields as well as stimulate the spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship. The main Campus of the University is located 27 kilometers along Kampala – Entebbe Highway.

The University admits students for the February as well as August Intakes and the programmes run on Day, Evening, Weekend and Distance Learning arrangements. Distance Learning, just like the Weekend programme, is tailored for the convenience of employed students who have to keep at their jobs.

The majority of University programmes were approved by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) for a period of another five years with effect from June 2011.

Prospective applicants may be interested to know that in addition to the Day programme for the Bachelor of Science in Journalism, the University has now commenced Evening and Weekend programmes for the course.

The University also offers the Diploma programme in HIV/AIDS Education and Management, which is conducted in collaboration with the AIDS Support Organization (TASO) Uganda.

The School of Law and Institute of Criminal Justice offers programmes leading to the award of Bachelor of Criminal Justice as well as Diplomas in Criminal Justice which are suitable for the public as well as the Armed Forces such as the Police, Prisons and the Army.

Agribusiness Entrepreneurship as well as Petroleum and Minerals Management Technology are some of the new programmes offered by the School of Sciences.

SCHOOL OF COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL ART AND DESIGN

The School offers MA CIAD (Commercial, Industrial Art and Design) in either: Textile Design, Fashion Design, Graphic Communication Design, Computer graphics, Sculpture, Jewelery,  Painting, Art History, Ceramics, and Drawing.

The Bachelors programmes include: Bachelors of Commercial Arts (BACA), Bachelors of Graphic communication Design (BGCD), and Bachelors of Fashion and Textile Design (BFTD). The Diploma programmes include: Diploma in Graphic Digital Design (DGDD), Diploma in Interior and Landscape Design (DILD), and Diploma in Vocation Arts and Design (DVAD).

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

The School offers the following programmes:

SCHOOL OF LAW AND INSTITUTE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE

• Bachelor of Laws (LL.B).

• Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ).

• Diploma in Criminal Justice (Dip. C.J).

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

For degree programmes, applicants should have either:

I. UCE (at least 5 passes) and UACE (at least 2 principal passes); or,

II. A Diploma qualifi cation from a recognized institution of Higher Learning; or,

III. A pass in Mature Age Examinations.

For Diploma programmes, the applicant should have either:

I. UCE (at least 5 passes) and UACE (at least 1 principal pass) plus 2 subsidiary passes; or,

II. The equivalent of the above.

Please note that for a number of the academic programmes indicated above the University also offers certificate qualifications where the minimum entry requirements are:

I. UCE (at least 5 passes) and UACE (at least 3 subsidiary passes).

For postgraduate programmes, the applicant should have:

I. A good first degree from a recognized institution of Higher Learning.
