O'level: Best schools ranked

The traditional and a few private schools continued to dominate districts’ performance in last year’s O’level examinations.

The ranking was based on each school’s performance in Division one, in comparison to the total number of candidates, who sat examinations at the school. It also provides each district’s total number of candidates who passed in Division one.

However, an analysis of the general ranking of schools, shows that private schools took most of the slots in the top 100 schools. In Kampala London College and Gayaza topped while Kisubi and Kitende topped in Wakiso. Namagunga and Namilyango topped Mukono district, Kitovu and St. Theresa were the best in Masaka district. Kabalega and Blessed Daminian topped Masindi. Rena College and Tawheed Academic were topped in Mayuge, and Mbarara district was led by Ntare and St. Joseph’s Vocational School.

The districts used in the ranking are UNEB classified districts. This means that some schools could be under a different district today, but UNEB considers their placement under their ‘mother’ districts.

In Kibaale, the best two schools were St. Kirigwajjo SS and St. Margaret Mary. In Mubende, Notre Dame Academy (Buseesa) and Sacred Heart Seminary topped. There are a number of schools which could be missing from the ranking, but with a registered improvement in performance. Some districts were left out of the ranking because they did have any candidate passing in Division One. These include Katakwi, Nakapiripirit, Kaabong, Amudat and Maracha. Others are Bulambuli, Buvuma, Kyankwanzi and Ntoroko.
