The National Drug Authority was established as a regulatory body responsible for regulation of drugs in the country. It was established by the National Drug Policy and Authority (NDP/A) Act, Cap. 206 to ensure the availability at all times of essential, efficacious and cost effective drugs to the entire population of Uganda as a means of providing satisfactory health care and safeguarding the appropriate use of drugs.

Functions of the National Drug Authority

Deal with the development and regulation of the pharmacies and drugs in the country, Control the importation, exportation and sale of pharmaceuticals, Control the quality of drug, Promote and control local production of essential drugs, Encourage research and development of herbal medicines, Establish and revise professional guidelines and disseminate information to the health professionals and the public, Provide advice and guidance to the Minister and bodies concerned with drugs on the implementation of the National Drug Policy

Duties of National Drug Authority

• Assessment of medicines for quality, safety and efficacy

• Registration of medicines before use on the Ugandan market

• Inspecting and licensing of all pharmaceuticals outlets in Uganda

• Inspecting foreign pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities that export their medicines to Uganda

• Licensing medicines importers

• Inspecting medicines at gazette ports of entry

• Testing drug samples for compliance to standards

• Screening and monitoring drug adverts

• Sensitization of health workers, district leaders, local councils and members of the public on matters relating to rational use and effective drug regulation

• Supervision of drug related clinical trials

Important Milestones in 20 years of Service

• NDA has facilitated the growth of medicines manufacturers in Uganda from 1 to 15. These manufacturers contribute approximately 15% of medicines consumed by the health sector compared to almost none before 1993.

• NDA ensures that all medicines registered In Uganda meet international quality safety and efficacy standards .NDA drug register has over 4000 registered human, veterinary and public health products.

• NDA Conducts quality control testing of samples of medicines, medical devices and public health products. The total number of samples tested at the laboratory has increased from 430 (1998) to close to 3000.

• NDA ensures that all medicines on the Uganda Market are of good quality and are properly handled by qualified health professionals. Seven regional offices were established in different parts of the country and over 500 pharmacies and 5000 drug shops are licensed annually.
