JOY Tumwesigye is an accountant with Uganda Prisons, a gospel singer and evangelist. She is a mother of two and wife to Charles Tumwesigye, a senior Police officer. Joy spoke to Vicky Wandawa about love.

Were you part of the police officer’s wives who took to the streets over prolonged power shortage?

Fortunately, my husband and I have our own house. So I was not part of the strike by the barracks’ occupants. But if I was living in the barracks, definitely I would have been part of the strike.

What is the first thing you notice when you meet a man for the first time?

I immediately, I debate on whether they are kempt or not. I appreciate kempt men whether they are handsome or not.

Is that what attracted you to your husband?

Oh yes, and if you met him, you certainly would notice that he is kempt.

Do you fear that campus girls will snatch him?

I am not afraid. Campus girls are not exactly after kempt men; they are after money for chips and chicken.

What is the worst lie a boyfriend has told you?

While we were dating, my husband told me he was a Munyankore, yet he is a Mukiga. He was so eloquent in the language, I would never have known if he had not opened up.

He did it because he knew I feared Bakiga. I had been told they are arrogant, which is not the case as I later found out.

Did you find out the truth at the alter?

Thankfully not. It was after two years of dating, when he said we should visit his village. When we travelled, I realised we were going to Kabale.

When I asked, he said that is where his home village was. I was disappointed, but since I was in love, I forgave him.

What does your husband compliment you most on?

He calls me beautiful, despite the fact that when we got married, I was very slender. But I have now put on weight.

How sure are you he does not prefer the slender you?

He would have told me so. However, he encourages me to visit the gym to keep fit.

What puzzles you most about men?

Most men are not straight forward; they tell lies and even when caught red-handed, they do not own up their mistakes.

Any word to marrieds on how to make the best of marriage

Accommodate each other. Each person has weaknesses, but do not focus on them. See the good as well. Also work at redeeming your love because as years go on, you may lose track.

So, even if you have children, once in a while, find time for yourself. Maybe go to a hotel, and away from the rest of the world, or else indifference will drift you apart.
