South Africa's Olympic 800m runner Mbulaeni Mulaudzi has been killed in a car crash. The news has been confirmed a few by the South African Minister of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula.

Mulaudzi, the 2009 world champion in the men's 800m, carried the South African flag at the opening ceremony of the 2004 summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Mulaudzi also became South Africa’s first black athlete to be ranked number one in the world. His first international medal was a silver at the 2000 African Championships in Athletics.

He retired from Athletics in 2013.
