A total of 248 students have scored first-class degrees at Makerere University. Last year the university  graduated 221 first-class degrees. But after 23 years, male students still out-perform their female counterparts, especially at Makerere University. One hundred twenty five males had first-class degrees compared to 109 women.

A first-class degree is the highest  level of degree awarded. Among the graduands who got first class degrees, the top scorers were:

Joel Tuliwangula, (mechanical engineering) with a cumulative grade point average of 4.89. Deborah Bongiri of Information Technology scored 4.80 lAggrey Ogweng (Animal Production Technology and Management) with 4.80. Bernard Engotoit (Office and information management )with 4.80. Rachael Namanda (Agribusiness management) with 4.79.

The information technology course topped with 29 firstclass degrees, followed by social sciences (19), Agri-business management and business management. The Makerere University 63rd graduation ceremony is scheduled to last four days starting today Tuesday till January 25, 2013.

The Chancellor, Prof Mondo Kagonyera will award diplomas to a total of the 12, 409 students, of which 5,821 (46.9%) are female and 6,588 (53.1%) are male. This year’s graduation will see students receive doctorates masters degrees, post graduate diplomas, undergraduate degrees will also be awarded.
