Uganda’s Flavia Namakula and defending champion Tanzania’s Angel Eaton are still the favorites as the 64th edition of the Uganda Ladies Open tournament tees off at Kitante on Thursday.
Tanzania’s Eaton will be seeking a hat-trick as Namakula fights to reclaim the championship she last won in 2011 at Kitante before Eaton won at the same venue the following year and at Entebbe last year.
The two will be up against a strong field of about 55 golfers from around East Africa who are going to compete in the three-day main event, October 16-18 at the par 72 Kitante course.
Others expected include regular contestants Idi Madina and Mary Karano. Ann Mululu, Kay Mclainne, and Sarah Hoare are some of the other foreign entries expected to give the likes of Eva Magala, Monica Ntege, Esther Okullo and Katy Kabenge the usual open challenge.
The event was launched on Tuesday during a press conference at which Uganda Ladies Golf Union president Esther Okullo said that over 15 foreign entries were expected in the main event of the handicap 0-18 which starts on Thursday.

About six junior players will also compete for prizes as has been the norm at ladies organized tournaments.
She said the main event will be contested for by about 40 players including Ugandans while the subsidiary event (handicap 19-36) will attract close to 40 players. Players in the men’s groups A-C will also join the action for one day on Saturday.
“Players from Zambia and Malawi had earlier confirmed their participation but we have since lost contact with them so we think they pulled out,” Okullo said.
