She Cranes’ World Cup qualifying campaign was a scandal. The manner in which the cash-strapped national netball team battled through the qualifiers in the sizzling heat of Botswana was so humbling that well-wishers are coming through with financial support to avoid a repeat.

While the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) prepares their World Cup preparatory budget, the Governor of BoU, Emmanuel Mutebile and National Insurance Corporation (NIC) could not wait.

On Monday, Mutebile (left) wired sh5m to the federation to prepare the team ahead of the World Cup scheduled for August 7-16 in Sydney, Australia, next year.

“This clearly puts across a positive image of interest from Ugandans to see that their country is represented at the world show,” team manager Jocelyn Ucanda stated.

“Our hands are open to any form of contributions from the public and stake holders as we prepare for this historical moment,” she added.

The ‘Project Sydney 2015’ campaign that has now raised a total of sh15m was started a week ago at a welcome dinner for the She Cranes held at Imperial Royal Hotel in Kampala after they emerged victorious at the Africa World Cup Qualifiers in Botswana. The She Cranes ended the qualifiers unbeaten.

They finished with 10 points at the top of the table to join Malawi, South Africa and Zambia as Africa’s representatives to the World Cup.

NIC, National Council of Sports general secretary Jasper Aligawesa and State Minister for Sports Hon Charles Bakkabulindi pledged sh2m, sh5m and sh3m respectively. UNF is arranging friendly games for the team.
