Museveni in Russia for official visit

MOSCOW, Russia - President Yoweri Museveni touched down in the Russian capital Moscow on Sunday ahead of a four-day official working visit.

He was accompanied by his wife, Janet Museveni who is also the minister for Karamoja.

The president is expected to give a public lecture at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and later hold a discussion with the Chamber of Commerce of the Russian Federation.

A guard of honour and a spectacular march past mounted by the Ceremonial troops from the Kremlin awaited the Ugandan leader upon his arrival in the Russian city.

He was met by the deputy chief of State Protocol Andrey Yakovlev and Russia’s ambassador to Uganda Sergei Shishkin.

Other African ambassadors to Russia including that of Nigeria, Burundi, Zambia and Zimbabwe also received Museveni.

Uganda was represented by the minister of foreign affairs Sam Kutesa, minister of state for defense Jeje Odongo and MPs Ssali Baker (Buikwe County West) and Nabirye Agnes (Woman MP Jinja municipality).

Uganda’s ambassador to Russia Moses Ebuk and the deputy Head of Mission Nelson Ocheger were there.

The President and his delegation is expected to meet various investors and later lay a ceremonial wreath on the grave of an unknown soldier at the Kremlin wall next to the Red Square.

Later this week, he will wrap up his visit with a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He was seen off at Entebbe International Airport by Frank Tumwebaze – the minister for presidency – , the police boss Maj Gen Kale Kayihura and the head of public service John Mitala alongside the commissioner general of prisons Dr. Johnson Byabashaija.
