The She Cranes journey to the Netball World Cup has started in high gear after the ‘Project Sydney 2015’ campaign that was launched on Monday recorded a sh10m pledge from different stake holders at the welcome dinner at the Imperial Royal Hotel in Kampala.

The dinner was jointly organised by National Council of Sports and Ministry of Education and Sports following the team’s performance at the Africa Netball World Cup qualifiers in Gaborone, Botswana where Uganda emerged winners over the weekend to book a slot at the World Cup.

The campaign started with a pledge of sh2m from National Insurance Corporation to contribute to the team’s preparation ahead of the international event scheduled from August 7-16th in Sydney, Australia next year.

Later National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary Jasper Aligawesa and State Minister for Sports Hon Charles Bakkabulindi also pledged sh5m and sh3m respectively towards same calling.

Team manager Jocelyn Ucanda who was appointed the She Cranes ambassador to Project Sydney 2015 campaign together with the team’s patron Sarah Nkonge will head the campaign that will prepare Uganda for the event they last took part in 35 years ago in Trinidad & Tobago in 1979.

“It’s an impressive start and we hope to convince other stakeholders to join the campaign and see off Uganda into the World Cup,” Ucanda said at the dinner.

She added that the Botswana and South Africa embassies had also vowed to provide full kits to the team and at the end of the dinner Tropical Bank had also promised to host the team at their premises where they will be unveiling their sponsorship package next week.

Chief guest Bakkabulindi later vowed to sale the idea to other parliamentarians and the government.
