Police detectives stormed the home of former Masaka Municipality Mayor John Tibyasa Matovu after receiving complaints from some family members of relatives they suspect of taking advantage of his mental related illness.
Earlier Police in Rakai arrested the LC 1 Chairman for Kalisizo Town cell, Richard Lwasa, in connection with the Powers of Attorney he purportedly acquired from Tibyasa entrusting him with responsibility to administer his properties in Kalisizo Town Council.
Police detectives interrogated the second wife of Tibyasa, Adrona Nyindombi and the house help identified as Wilson Katuramu over the matter on November 19.
The Southern Regional Police Spokesman, Noah Sserunjongi, confirmed the development saying that some relatives are being investigated in connection with the case.
Tibyasa’s children who filed the case at Kalisizo Police Station in Rakai district have been identified as Beatrice Babirye, John Kizza and a lecturer at Makerere University, Dr Wasswa Matovu.
Babirye, who is a security officer attached to the Kabaka Protection Unit, said they were shocked to learn that Tibyasa who is undergoing mental rehabilitation, had signed Powers of Attorney documents over his estates in Kalisizo.
“We suspect that Lwasa and some of our family relatives are taking advantage of the mental illness of our father for their selfish interest; it is illegal to engage a mentally sick man into such decisions regarding his family properties,” Babirye said.
Speaking to The New Vision, Babirye said it was strange for Tibyasa to give the Powers of Attorney to Lwasa without the consent of family stakeholders.
Babirye said she informed the Vice President, Edward Ssekandi, to whom Tibyasa entrusted legal matters regarding his properties and requested him to intervene.
Lwasa, who was released on Police bond, denied the charges saying that the Powers of Attorney granted to him by Tibyasa originated from the family.
Tibyasa(80) resigned from office in 2008 after he started developing acute memory loss. He was diagnosed by a psychiatrist attached to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, Dr Musisi Ssegane.
