Church warns on sports betting

As sports journalists in Uganda remembered their fallen colleagues at their annual memorial service on Thursday, the chief celebrant Mary Joseph Ssebunya warned against dangers of sports betting describing it as danger to the lives of youth.

As sports journalists in Uganda remembered their fallen colleagues at their annual memorial service on Thursday, the chief celebrant Mary Joseph Ssebunya warned against dangers of sports betting describing it as danger to the lives of youth.
“Sports betting is a danger to society. People are betting their lives. USPA should help get people out of the danger,” Ssebunya called out.
Ssebunya applauded USPA members for the consistent prayers for their fallen colleagues and urged the journalists to help wrangling sports personalities in country settle their differences.
“Help us check sports (federations/associations) to avoid ill characters. U-17 should be U-17 and as sports journalists, you can make people change their wrong ways,” Ssebunya added.
The church service started as a memorial service for Leo Kabunga, Kenneth Matovu, Peter Ekarot and Francis Batte who died in a tragic motor accident in Lugazi while from association duty in Jinja in August 2001.
The service has become an event to remember all 28 USPA members, who have since passed on since 1970.
Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) was joined by FUFA president Moses Magogo and Uganda Olympic Committee William Blick among others for the two-hour church service.
USPA members head to Entebbe where they will paint a zebra-crossing as well as have a procession in the town before winding up the day with a mini football tournament.
