Unknown thugs have attacked several residents of Sheema district, including four priests, raising fear in the area.

The thugs, who are reportedly organised in small groups, have attacked different homes in the district. The thugs’ first victims were four priests of the West Ankole Church of Uganda Diocese.

The thugs set residents’ huts on fire and vandalise the houses.

Among the priests who were attacked are Rwabutura archdeacon Rev. Can. Yoramu Bambanza, Masheruka archdeacon Rev. Can. Yoramu Mwesigye, Rev. Yorokamu Tayebwa of Kyabandara parish and Rev. Can. Patrick Agaba of Rwengando parish.

The residents said unless the local leaders and security personnel stop these barbaric acts, the situation might escalate into a security threat.

Sheema Police commander Ezekiel Emitu said: “Many incidences of attacks have been registered in the district.”

He said the Police are doing their best to bring the situation to order and that a number of people have been arrested and are under investigation.

He said if there are people who have grievances, they should settle them amicably. “It is criminal to solve one wrong with another."

Martial Tumusiime, the mid-south western regional Police spokesperson, said some suspects were arrested and would be taken to court.”

The West Ankole diocesan secretary, Rev. Can. Authur Atwiine said: “We have talked to security operatives to provide our people with security.”

He, however, said the clergy are too many to be covered by the Police.
