Uganda cranes together with the Ministry of Health have embarked on a campaign to create awareness about the dangers of teenage pregnancies among girls.

The campaign dubbed ‘Score a goal, save a life’ initiative, seeks to highlight the plight faced by teenage mothers in the process of giving life.

“We have decided to use Uganda Cranes because many men and boys who impregnate these young girls are football lovers. We hope they will take on the message from the players because teenage pregnancy is real in Uganda and we need to deal with it,” said Bernard Ogwel, the FUFA executive committee member.

Unveiling the campaign at Mandela National Stadium Namboole, Lydia Akoth from the ministry of Health said pregnancies among girls of school going age, were still high adding that there is need to engage men who lure girls into unprotected sex.

“We are going to mobilize the men and boys who engage in sex with these girls and tell them about the dangers of impregnating young girls, “said Akoth.

According to Robinah Biteyi, the executive director White Ribbon Alliance, one of the partners in the drive, the campaign will help create awareness among mothers thus reducing maternal mortality rates in the country.

Biteyi noted that many women were dying from what she called preventable causes just because they have not been sensitized on life saving skills.
