Kiprop optimistic ahead of world championship

Isaac Kiprop’s 2008 record of being the first athlete to beat Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele in the 15km marathon European championship is his motivation that will drive him to win tomorrow’s World Mountain Running championship in Italy.


The 25 -year old athlete told the New Vision that is well set and ready for any opponent in the championship that will attract the world’s best athletes.

“I just took a break because of injury but I am confident of getting a podium finish at the championship,” the soft - spoken athlete stated.

Kiprop emerged as a promising talent and won the East African Cross Country Championships in 2004.

Kiprop is on the team as the first reserve and joins, James Kibet, Kibet Soyekwa, Nathan Ayeko and team captain Daniel Rotich in the senior men category that will be out to defend the title won last year in Poland.

Philip Kiplimo, Geoffrey Kusuro, Nathan Ayeko and Peter Kibet won last year’s edition taking the top four positions.

Philip Kipyeko, Stella Chesang and Patricia Chekwemoi will battle in the junior women’s event. and Patricia Kemboi will compete in the men and women junior categories respectively.
