The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Fiona Woolf and a delegation of investors from the UK, are in Uganda to explore trade and investment opportunities and to promote London as the world’s leading financial and business hub.

According to a press statement from the British High Commission in Kampala, Woolf, who arrived in Kampala yesterday, with businessmen and trade experts from Britain, will address two workshops on the investment opportunities and financing and public private partnerships.

During the two-day visit, she will also hold talks with the ministers of finance, works and transport, energy and minerals, the deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda and the executive director of Kampala Capital City Authority.

This is her first visit to Uganda, according to the British High Commission. Woolf serves as UK’s global ambassador for the country’s international finance and business services. London, according to the British High Commission, is keen to partner with Uganda to promote inward investment and skills transfer and ensure UK remains one of the largest investors in Uganda.

The main function of the Lord Mayor of the City of London is to promote UK’s business and financial sectors. The position is different from that of the Mayor of London, who is in charge of running a local government in London.

The Lord Mayor of the City of London is the official title of the head of the City of London Corporation, which provides services for the Square Mile, also known as the City of London, London’s financial district.

Woolf, who is an accomplished lawyer, became the 686th Lord Mayor of London in 2013, becoming the second woman to hold the position in the city established over 800 years ago. Woolf’s tenure ends this year.
