Isaac Kiprop has been drafted in Team Uganda that will represent the country at the World Mountain Running Championships due September 13 in Italy.

The Athletics Federation is still looking for sh16m to enable the team travel to the world event which will be hosted next week.

Kiprop had been entered as the first reserve to join the scoring trio of Daniel Rotich, Kibet Soyekwa and Nathan Ayeko to the annual event, where Uganda will be defending the world title in the senior men category.

Kiprop, who was Uganda’s promising talent, winning the East African cross country championships in 2004 and going ahead to bat Kenenisa Bekele at his peak, went off the running scene for some time, and has been trying to make a comeback for the last two years ever since he joined police.

He finished fifth in the national mountain running championships and having chosen the top three in the national mountain running championships in Kapchorwa, the final technical committee meeting decided to include Kiprop on the team, as a way of boosting his comeback.

“He needs something to inspire him to run more. He is talented and we are hoping that this outing will drive him to a better performance,” said the national athletics federation president Domenic Otuchet as he communicated the details.

They will be joined by James Kibet, who is currently in Italy for the senior men category while Philip Kipyeko will be competing in the junior men.

Stella Chesang and Patricia Chekwemoi will be competing in the junior women event at the one day event.
