Ariong murder suspect committed to High Court

The Buganda Road court has committed Edison Waako, the main suspect in the murder of the Assistant Inspector of police, John Michael Ariong, to the High Court in Kampala for trial.

Presiding over the case, Grade one magistrate Julius Borore committed Waako on grounds that inquiries in the case were complete and committal papers had been prepared for him for the purpose of sending him to the High Court in the next convenient trial session.

Waako is the only suspect who previously remained remanded in Luzira while the rest of his co-accused were released on May 31, 2012.

Nakawa grade one magistrate Mackay Opolot had then told Waako that his file had been sent to the chief registrar whose duty was to issue a production warrant from Buganda Road court.

The released suspects were Catherine Dembe, Robert Kavuma, Yoweri Kintu, Ismail Kiirya, Abdu Mutwalib Kayondo, Harold Kaija, Mohammed Sebugwawo, Malik Nsubuga, Hanifa Nakitende and Twalib Kakande.

Ariong was murdered in March this year when an object was hurled from atop a construction site Mini-Price mall on Ben Kiwanuka and it struck his head, causing fatal damage to his brain.

He died on his way to hospital. Ariong had been seated on a Police patrol Pickup truck that was trailing a procession headed by opposition leader Kizza Besigye and Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago Street.
