Public servants will have to wait until Friday to get their salaries for September, says Jonas Tumwine, the Ministry of Public Service spokesperson.

He says they were working tirelessly to ensure the salaries are on the people’s accounts by Friday.

Public servants usually get their salaries by the 28th day of the month, but due to the financial scandals which rocked the ministry this month, the clearance of the salaries was delayed.

One of the crucial offices in paying the salaries at the ministry was closed and some of its staff arrested in an alleged pension scam. The closed office was the data centre, where the Integrated Personnel and Payroll System (IPPS) is kept.

The system contains all the details of the public servants and, therefore, crucial in processing of their salaries.

“The office has been opened and we are accessing details of the people’s salaries. We shall pay the salaries by October 5th,” Tumwine says.

A source at Kayunga district, who preferred anonymity, said the ministry wrote to them about the delay.

He said some people had become demoralised and were absconding from duty on the pretext of looking for money from other sources to survive.

A teacher in Manafwa said the news was disappointing.

“We were told to expect salaries after October 10.Teachers are disappointed. Some of my colleagues have started dodging students so that they can find ways of survival,” said Emma Kutobola, a teacher in Manafwa.

Last week, the Police arrested employees of Ministry of Public service over allegations of misappropriation of over sh63b pension for workers of the East African Community.
