KCCA denies plans to demolish Mapeera House

The Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Jennifer Musisi,  has scoffed at media reports about the impending demolition of over 200 buildings in Kampala, including Mapeera House, labeling them  as “alarmist and fabricated.”
 
Musisi clarified that the list which was erroneously quoted in the press as having been tabled in the Presidential Affairs Committee of Parliament was that of plots in wetlands and not buildings earmarked for demolition.
 
She noted that some of the buildings mentioned may have been erected with the approval of the then Kampala City Council.
 
“The stories of KCCA breaking down all those buildings, including Mapera, are alarmist and fabricated. We did not present such a list to parliament. We presented wetland plots and the degradation problem,” Musisi told New Vision recently, adding, “the law provides for other penalties for existing buildings including fines and prosecution. Demolition is a very last resort.”
 
In an effort to decongest the city, KCCA has taken a tough stance against buildings constructed in road reserves, wetlands and landlords turning would-be packing lots and toilets into shops.

Mid this month, a structure erected in a road reserve along Nile Avenue in Kampala was razed down on KCCA orders.
