Organisers are leaving nothing to chance in their quest for a safe Pearl of Africa Rally. The strictness in safety standards is underlined by the presence of no nonsense Federation of International Automobile offi cial Viren Goricha.

Goricha, who is dreaded by drivers because of his very high standards, will again be in charge of today’s scrutineering.

“I’m not here to chase drivers because we want entries and it is their sport, but I will not compromise on safety and they must adhere to safety regulations,” he stated.

Goricha’s message comes as a welcome call after a recent incident in the Southern Motor Championship in Ziroobwe that claimed three lives.

Goricha will check the cars at Shell Lugogo on Thursday ahead of the competition starting Friday.

The FIA official however sounded confi dent that the drivers would meet the standards.

“We have done a lot of correspondences on what I need. So, when they turn up and have standard helmets, full safety Kit, fireproof clothing including vests and pants and sealed turbo and transmissions of their cars, all should be okay,” he said.

Meanwhile, the event got a boost on Wednesday from Century Bottling Company. The soft drink company will cater for all the event’s drinks.

Managing Director Norton Kingwill and Country Sales and Marketing Manager Robert Davies handed over Coke and Dasani Water to FMU vice President Dusman Okee at the company offices in Namanve.

“Pearl of Africa rally is an asset to us. It is a well organised activity that we shall continue to support,” Davies stated.

“We are proud to have been your partners for seven years running. As Shell Powers the Engines, we shall power the drivers,” Davies added.

Other sponsors include Silver Springs Hotel, Ogas solution, Fire and Safety Appliance, Zion Estates, Coca Cola, Ambulance Africa, Vivo Energy and Swatt Security.
