THERE was fear that Mun*G’s Namalayo concert, which took place last Friday at Kati Kati, would end up in the gutter, just  like the recently flopped shows.

After all, by 8:00pm, the time the concert was to start, only media and organisers were the common sight at the venue, outnumbering those who had paid. Backstage,  even the curtain raisers feared it would flop.

At about 9:00pm, emcee Kats, who worked alongside The Hypeman, had to get onto stage to kick-start the show to prevent the few already in from leaving. And his first joke was, “the show is to go on for the two of you around.”

But then, bit by bit, the crowd kept swelling up, ultimately turning up a considerable crowd and erasing egg off the face of Mun*G, real name Emmanuel Mungi Matovu. Otherwise, it would have been embarrassing for the chap’s maiden concert since he started singing four years back, had fallen flat on its face.

The show kicked off with opening acts from a number of up-coming rappers, some of whom may never shine.

The Maisha dancers, however, upped the tempo with their erotic dance moves before established hiphopers like Navio, Lyrical G, Don MC, Viboyo and Vampino took over.

Mun*G got on stage at about 10:30pm amid wild cheers, just after GNL’s impressive performance.

Draped in a white Mun*G doing his thing suit, the Namalayo singer took Mun*G’s performance exhilarated the crowd Winners pose for the cameras with the First Lady, Janet Museveni (4th left, front row) after the ceremony Olympic gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich (R) receives his award Afrigo Band won the Best Entertainer award King’s Kids entertaining the guests Angella Katatumba performing at the awards pictures by mubiru kakebe pictures by abu mwesigwa the audience through a number of his hits like Ebintu, Gila Tugile, One Uganda, Champion, Namalayo and other songs in which he collaborates with his fellow Baboon Forest artistes.

There was a sombre mood when a moment of silence was observed in memory of fallen musicians like Mr. X, Fred Maiso, Sera and MC Jimmy, who all passed away this year.

The show was not a flop, neither was it massive. But every other nittygritty when it came to organising and producing the event was tick.

Socialite Judith Heard crowned it off by outbidding all with a sh500,000 for the singer’s portrait.
