Kampala residents to be registered

Government has started registering all the people residing in Kampala as a measure to curb the high crime rate in the city and its neighbouring areas.

All residents have to register with their Local Councils in all divisions starting this month.

 The outgoing Residential District Commissioner Alice Muwanguzi said registration is already on going in some divisions.

The move which was initiated by RDCs and other security organizations last month is aimed at collecting personal data of all residents for easy identification in case of crime and other related security concerns.

“We have already given out forms to various local councils in various divisions. Some like in Nakawa have started registration. We urge all people to respond positively,” she said.

Muwanguzi revealed this while handing over office to her successor Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka at the Housing Finance building in Kampala.

 Muwanguzi was also replaces Hashaka as the new Resident District Commissioner in Kumi, said many crimes including murder and aggravated robbery among others were rampant in the city.

 “I am going to make sure that these criminals are court martialed and killers shot on site. There is no need to compromise with killers since they also do not value other people's lives,” she said.

She noted that her main focus is to make sure that government programs are implemented to benefit the people, saying she will not tolerate corruption tendencies.

Hashaka promised to follow up the President's pledge to construct over 100 toilets in Kampala among others.

The Presidential Advisor in charge of RDCs, Mohamed Mayanja asked RDCs to desist from bribes and other corruption tendencies.

“You are supposed to be chief monitors of government projects. Never allow to be compromised by opportunists. It is your duty to fight corruption. Avoid reopening cases already solved by your predecessors especially land wangles,” he said.

Mayanja also stressed that the former Nakawa deputy RCC, Mande Kintu was recalled to concentrate on mobilization work at the party headquarters.

All deputy RCCs attended the function.
