Things can’t be better for Ugandan sportsmen. Barely a month after the country won an Olympic gold, boxer Joseph Lubega has also won the World Boxing Council International light heavyweight title.

Lubega knocked out homeboy Kirt Sinnette in the fourth round in Trinidad and Tobago’s city of Port-of-Spain to win the previously vacant title.

Not even the spirited home support for the Caribbean fighter could stop the Ugandan who stretched his record to 13(6kos)- 6-1.

With this title, Lubega, who fights under the name Joey Vegas, has chances of being rated among WBC’s top 15. Such a rating boosts his chances of getting a title shot in big boxing bodies like the WBC, WBA and IBF.

Lubega becomes the second Ugandan to win a WBCI title. Justin Juuko won a similar crown in the super featherweight division in 1997. Sinnette ,38, is the current WBCI Caribbean Federation title holder.

He went into the ring with a better record than Lubega. He had 22 fights (17 kos) with one loss.

According to his agent Danny Lutaaya, Lubega is expected home tomorrow night and will most likely relinquish the ABU title to concentrate on defending the WBCI crown.
