Search for new deputy IGG on after Karokora dropped

The search for another deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG) has resumed after President Yoweri Museveni withdrew the nomination of Andrew Munanura Karokora.

Karokora’s name was recently submitted to Parliament for approval.

The President made the disclosure during a meeting with NRM members on the appointments committee of Parliament at State House, Nakasero on Sunday night.

“He told us that he telephoned the Speaker, withdrawing that nominee,” sources said.

The President, according to sources, withdrew Karokora’s name following a petition by some lawyers’ bodies and individuals with cases against the nominee.

If approved, Karokora was to join Justice Irene Mulyagonja and her deputy Raphael Baku to fully constitute the Ombudsman’s office.

Early this year, the Constitutional Court ruled that the Inspectorate of Government could not carry on with its work until the office was fully constituted.

On Monday, both the secretary of the law council, Margaret Apinyi and executive director of Uganda Law Society Grace Babihuga said they were not aware of any petition against Karokora.

By last evening, Karokora said he was not aware of any petition against him.

“Last week, I took my documents and everything is okay as far as I am concerned. I am waiting for an invitation,” he said when asked whether he had received any feedback about his nomination.

Born on March 26, 1969, Karokora holds a Master’s in Law from University College London.

He studied at Ntare School in Mbarara and the University of Dar-es-Salaam before joining the Law Development Centre in Kampala for a postgraduate diploma in legal practice.

Karokora also holds a postgraduate diploma in taxation and revenue administration.

He has worked with the Uganda Revenue Authority as assistant revenue officer in the income tax department.

Karokora was also deputy registrar with the Tax Appeals Tribunal and lecturer at the Law Development Centre.
