Lwengo polls: NRM calls news conference

NRM leaders in Lwego district are set to address journalists over Bukoto South by-election where DP candidate Matthias Nsubuga emerged the victor.

He beat NRM’s Alintuma Nsambu, the former minister for ICT by 1,400 votes.

Nsambu’s mobile phone was still off on Friday morning but Kalungu woman MP Florence Kintu called reporters for a briefing. New Vision online will keep you updated on the developments from the briefing.

The voting, which started early Thursday morning featured  Nsambu, Nsubuga, FDC’s Julius Sebugwawo and Independent Dan Katula.

But campaigns leading to Thursday's election placed the NRM flag bearer and the DP secretary general as top favorites.
But the process did not go on as smoothly as it had begun as three Members of Parliament from the opposition were Thursday morning arrested on allegations that they were causing havoc during the election.

The seat fell vacant when the Court of Appeal upheld the High Court's nullification of the election of NRM's Hajji Muyanja Mbabali as area MP.  DP's Mathias Nsubuga petitioned court on the premise that Mbabali didn't have the requisite academic qualifications.

Unlike most by-elections there was a high turn up of voters. From 8:30am when the polling stations opened, voters queued in long lines. "The voting has gone on fairly. The attendance is good… the level of enthusiasm is high. I think people here are interested in choosing their leader and the fast they do it the better," Electoral Commission chairman, Eng. Badru Kiggundu commented.
