Josephine Nabakooza, 21, emerged first-runner up in the recently-concluded Miss Uganda pageant. She told Catherine Tamale why she lost the crown

You missed the crown, yet you were doing well, what happened?
I was doing well, but I got excited and lost track as the crowd cheered. I became nervous and I could not answer questions right.

Did you expect to win?
I knew I would make it to the top five.

What do you think of Bizzu, the new Miss Uganda?
She is full of surprises. At first she was not a threat, but towards the grand finale, I realised she had the potential to win and, indeed, she did.

Was your boyfriend happy that you joined the pageant?
I convinced him and he was okay with it. I guess he was excited when I was named first runner-up.

What attracted you to him?
His height.

When do you hope to get married?
I think I will be ready at 28.

What do people find attractive about you?
I am friendly, jolly and beautiful.

What is your beauty secret?
I apply my makeup right. I also remind myself that I am beautiful every day.

You were the crowd favourite, but you did not take the crown. How do you feel?
I was disappointed, but I am getting over it.

What failed you?
I did my best and I hoped to win, but I was surprised someone else did.

Did you think Bizzu would take the crown?
I did not focus on who else might win. I honestly didn’t see it coming, but I think she is good.

What did you love about the whole Miss Uganda experience?
It was an opportunity for me to chase my dreams.

Are you seeing someone?
No. The right person has not yet come my way.

What qualities do you look for in a man?
He should be God-fearing, handsome and hardworking.

What are your most beautiful features?
My eyes and dimples.
