Use a handkerchief
There are many children who do not have handkerchiefs. When they catch flu, they use bare hands to clean their nose. This is a bad habit because they end up spreading the flu to almost all their classmates with whom they share books and seats. At one time in Primary Seven, even our teacher got the infection.

Our latrine is smell-free
Sometime back it used to be difficult for me to spend a minute in the latrine because of the bad smell. During Sanitation Week last term, many activities were carried out in our school. We smoked the latrine using dry banana leaves. The smell is no more. I thank the WASH club for sensitising us about the value of a clean environment. Those who have never kept their environment clean should do so. You will never regret it. God bless New Vision and WaterAid for their effort.

I no longer hate bathing
I used to hate bathing. Every time they would send me to bathe, I would wash my legs, face and arms because I feared cold water. One day, while at school, I realised my friends were avoiding me; no one wanted to play with me. I wondered why my friends were running away from me. One of my friends called Alesi in P5 told me I had a bad smell. She advised me to get water and bathe immediately. Now I enjoy bathing. I advise pupils to bathe regularly.

We need a nearby borehole
In my village we move for four-and-half kilometres to look for safe drinking water. We don’t have borehole near the village. We have a well, which is not safe. Many people have suffered from diarrhoea after drinking water from that well. It is not safe for children to walk to the borehole. Some children have been kidnapped and beheaded. We also lack containers like jerrycans for storing water and purifiers for killing germs in the water.

Avoid crowded places
Human waste must be properly disposed of in latrines or toilets. Urine and faeces are a source of diseases, for example, cholera, diarrhoea and dysentery. Overcrowding can also lead to poor sanitation. If there are many people in an area, it becomes difficult to keep the environment clean. It is also difficult to provide facilities for waste disposal in an overcrowded place. In fact, overcrowding in classrooms and houses leads to frequent infections such as chest and throat infections like flu and cough.

Thank you WaterAid, Vision
Thank you New Vision and WaterAid for introducing WASH club in our school. This club has helped us to maintain proper hygiene and sanitation. Because of WASH club, children are learning the importance of washing hands after using toilets. We are very grateful. May you continue with the same spirit.

Stop smoking
In our community there are people who smoke. Smoking causes air pollution and makes it difficult for people to get fresh air to breath. Smoking also causes diseases like lung cancer. Please stop smoking.

Our borehole is congested
In our village we have only one borehole, which  serves three villages. The distance from our home to the borehole is one-and-a-half miles. Since the borehole is located in a trading centre, it always becomes congested. During the holidays when all the children from the four villages are at home, the queues become very long.

Thank you WaterAid
I want to thank WaterAid for sponsoring sanitation and hygiene programmes that help us prevent diseases. We enjoy reading the newspapers you send us. I would like you to provide us with containers for washing hands after visiting toilets so that we can prevent diseases. Please continue sending us the newspapers. May God bless you.

Do not share clothes
Some children love sharing clothes even when they have skin diseases like ringworms. This is a bad habit because skin diseases can easily spread from one person to another.

I bought the right medicine for my little brother
When my youngest brother fell sick during holidays, my mother sent me to a nearby pharmacy to buy him medicine. She gave me money and a piece of paper bearing the name of the medicine. The pharmacist gave me the medicine with instructions that he swallows one tablet three times a day. I did as she had instructed and would give him juice and food to eat. In just three days, my brother had healed. My mother thanked me for taking care of my brother.

I gave my brother first aid
During holidays, my brother and I were left alone at home. We decided to ride our bicycles. We rode so fast that  in a blink of an eye my brother was lying flat on the ground. When I approached him, he was bleeding. I carried him into the house, ran to my mother’s bedroom and got the first aid kit. I cleaned his wound with spirit. I then tied a bandage on the wound to stop bleeding. In a few minutes my brother was asleep. When our parents returned later in the afternoon, I narrated to them the story and they warned us never again to ride bicycles so fast because we could get more serious injuries.
