Build a strong family bond by emphasising unity

Building a strong, united home is every parent’s desire. Given the demands that keep the family apart, unity has to be deliberately planted, nurtured and grown.

Building a strong, united home is every parent’s desire. Given the demands that keep the family apart, unity has to be deliberately planted, nurtured and grown. Strong, united families are a formidable force. A family that works together as a team accomplishes a lot in life.

What do we need to do to achieve this?
-Communicate and encourage unity
Always talk in terms of “we” instead of “I”. There are many things that threaten family unity such as favouritism and fake accusations. As a parent, work towards treating each of your children equally. As a family, work together to resolve problems that arise from fake accusations.

-Do not magnify differences
In the family, there are always differences. There are temperaments and personalities that are easy to deal with and those that are not. There are bright children and those who are not. As parents, we should never magnify the differences. Rather we should create an environment where each child can thrive in their own gifting and each of their contribution to the family valued.

-Equal platform to express themselves
Family meetings and discussions are a good route to building family unity. Each member of the family must have an equal platform where they can express themselves and where they can be heard and their opinion respected and nothing beats family meetings. They are relevant both in times of joy and hardship.

-Shared goals and values
When you share a vision and values with people, you feel close to them. If we want to build strong united families, this is key. As children approach their teens, we should share with them the vision and the goals of the family. When we start dreaming together and planning together, we become closer and this culture goes on for a lifetime.

-Religious belief
Common religious beliefs are key to building a united family. With religious beliefs, come customs and values. We should honour religious beliefs by performing religious duties together. This has a way of gluing us together and increasing our commitment to our families.

-Have fun together
This creates many good memories. Fun together will always create a good family picture. Go to birthday parties together, have your own family fun night, take trips to the village together. Go for a holiday together. The more fun you have together, the stronger your bond shall be.
