SOLECO Construction Company handed over the MTN Arena, formerly Lugogo Indoor stadium, to National Council of Sports and sponsors MTN Foundation last week, with caution about the carpet floor.

The facility a 998-seater — the biggest and most modern in East and Central Africa — was closed in December 2010 because the floor collapsed soon after it had been refurbished.

The project coordinator Paul Sembera revealed that renovations on the floor and the roof of the 40-year old facility had doubled the cost to over sh2bn. The initial cost was sh1.4bn.

The refurbished floor with a four-inch thick carpet is an ultra-modern playing surface for basketball, badminton, volleyball, netball and indoor soccer.

It can also accommodate a boxing ring and table tennis facilities.

Sembera said that any game the stadium is meant for and other social activities can be held there now as long as high-heeled shoes are not allowed on the carpet.
