Two people are confirmed dead and 25 others are receiving treatment after a Fuso lorry reg. no. UAQ 595Q overturned on Saturday in Arua.

The 11.25pm incident occurred at Etori village, Arivu Sub-County along Arua-Nebbi road approximately 20km from Arua town.

Police said the lorry that was travelling from Panyamur fish market in Nebbi district to Arua town had 35 fishmongers on board.

Donasiano Opwonya, the OC traffic Arua, identified the dead as Asiraf Isa, 33, a resident of Ocodri village, Terego County and Aida Ndaru, 50, a resident of Muni Ogai village, Oluko Sub-County all in Arua district.

According to Opwonya, part of the vehicle broke off from the frame and fell while negotiating a sharp corner. He said they were people sitting on top of Fish and onions that were loaded onto the lorry.

Opwonya attributed the accident to reckless driving and the dangerous mechanical condition of the vehicle.

Josephine Angucia, the North Western police spokesperson, said eight people were uninjured and the injured were rushed to Arua and Kuluva hospitals in critical condition.

She said the driver of the vehicle only identified as Acile is on run and that efforts are under way to find to arrest him.

“A baby identified as Walter Ayikobua, 11 months survived the incident uninjured while his colleague Subura Lekuru, one year was rushed to Arua hospital in a critical condition,” Angucia added.

Angucia advised people not to board vehicles suspected to be in dangerous mechanical conditions to avoid such cases of accident.
