The Uganda Red Cross official has appealed to sports organisers to emulate rugby and partner with them to mobilise the community and donate blood to save lives of many lying in hospitals.

Ismail Kyagulanyi who is also  the chairman of Ready for Action team (REAT) made the appeal  in an interview during the Western Region Rugby 7s tournament over the weekend in Mbarara that ended with Rwandan side Buffaloes lifting the title after a 17-7 defeat over Uganda Christian University Mukono-UCU.

“I’m impressed that over 200 participants have so far joined us to save the lives of others in the hospitals by donating blood and we promise that we shall provide medical services to any sports activities once called,” Kyagulanyi said.

“Sports events are a good avenue to get more blood donors so that we counter the increasing demands for blood in the hospitals,” Kyagulanyi added.

Rwanda Buffaloes defeated UCU 17-7 in the final played at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) grounds on Saturday.

The tournament organised by western Uganda Rugby Club and MUST was sponsored by Uganda Red Cross Mbarara region and Vision Group, attracted six senior teams and two schools Ntare and Mbarara High.
