The King of Alur Kingdom, Philip Rwoth on Thursday condemned early child marriage saying the girl child should be given an opportunity to complete her education.

“It’s unfortunate that a girl child is forced into early marriage due to poverty. This bad practice among some communities should be fought at all levels to enable a girl child complete her education,” Rwoth said.

Rwoth was briefing journalists and Action Aid Uganda officials at Broadway Inn, in Nebbi district about the importance of International Women’s Day.

He noted that women play a significant role in the development of the economy. He singled out his mother and sisters as important women who have played a big role of nurturing him.

The King pointed out that his Kingdom continues to sensitise the public against early child marriage. “Because of biting poverty some families force their girl child into early marriage in order to gain financially. This practice should be discouraged and put to an end,” Rwoth said.

The celebrations are being marked under the theme: “Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures,” presided by President Yoweri Museveni. The King urged Government to implement laws regarding domestic violence because many women continue to suffer from gender based sexual violence.
