Tullow Uganda is committed to operating as a responsible company and contributing to social economic development in the communities in which the company operates. The company therefore has a comprehensive Social Enterprise (SE) programme that has made a tangible difference in the communities through the various projects the business undertakes.

TULLOW UGANDA’S FOCUS

Tullow’s Social Enterprise focus areas include health, education, environment and enterprise development. The company works directly with the communities adjacent to its operations, addressing their most pressing needs to improve quality of life as well as enabling longer-term social empowerment. Tullow also partners with several development organisations to ensure that all programmes supported have a high quality output, impact and sustainability.

INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS SUPPORTING HEALTH AND EDUCATION

Tullow Oil is currently constructing six infrastructure projects supporting the areas of health and education in both Hoima and Buliisa districts. These projects were requested by the community and the district leadership to help support accessibility to improved health and education services. The total investment for the six projects is approximately $5m.

PROJECTS IN BULIISA DISTRICT


In Buliisa District, the company is constructing two infrastructure projects; Buliisa Health Centre IV and a multipurpose Community Resource Centre at a cost of$330,000.

  • Buliisa Health Centre IV


Tullow Oil is constructing the Buliisa Health Centre IV in Buliisa district. This will be the first and largest health centre in the area that will be supporting a population of over 100,000. The objective to support the community with a health centre facility that will provide the necessary health care services in an area which is currently under-served. The total investment for this project is $2million.
 

  • Buliisa Community Resource Centre


Tullow is also constructing a multi-purpose community resource centre in Buliisa District. The centre will be used as an access for information about activities in the area and updates from the district leadership. The centre will be equipped with a library, computers and a community hall. The project investment is $330,000.

PROJECTS IN HOIMA DISTRICT

In Hoima District, Tullow is constructing two health centres and two primary schools. These are Sebagoro Health Centre III, Kyehoro Maternity Centre, Kaiso Primary School and the Kyehoro Primary School whose total investment is $2.6m.

  • Kyehoro Maternity Health Centre -Hoima


In the area of health, Tullow has worked closely with the communities, local authorities and health partners in establishing one of the company’s key infrastructure project, the Kyehoro Health Centre, based in Kaiso near Lake Albert. The health centre supports the communities with various health services including HIV/ AIDS prevention and treatment, immunisation, malaria treatment, family planning and antenatal services
 

  • Sebagoro Health Centre - Hoima


Tullow Uganda will also be supporting the construction of another health centre in Kaiso (Hoima District), the Sebagoro Health Centre II. The objectives of establishing the health centre is to also address the community health needs in the area. The health centre will also provide services to support malaria treatment, family planning, HIV and Aids prevention and treatment plus other health services

  • Kyehoro Primary School – Hoima


In supporting education, Tullow is committed to establishing new infrastructure for the Kyehoro Primary School in Hoima District with the aim of promoting education in the area. The plan for the school includes two classroom blocks, three staff houses and a kitchen.

  • Kaiso Primary School


Tullow will also supportthe construction of Kaiso Primary school in Hoima district provide better educational infrastructure or the community. The school will have two classroom blocks, three staff houses, kitchen and lavatories.

Capacity Building in Education


In supporting education, Tullow’s Social Enterprise programmes invest in building capacity of teachers, school management committees and government officials to progressively take greater roles in improving the quality of primary education. The company supported a “train the trainers” programme to support improvements in teaching, provided thousands of text books to local schools and supported construction and refurbishment of school classroom blocks.
 


Enterprise Development Projects

Agro- Enterprise projects


Under the enterprise development programme, Tullow aims to develop and support local entrepreneurs in order to build a semi-skilled workforce in the community that will create and sustain employment, separate yet complimentary to the oil industry. The company has worked with communities and partners in Buliisa and Hoima to develop sustainable livelihood projects in agro-enterprise, trained farmers in leadership skills and promoted savings and credit schemes.

Environmental Projects

Tullow is committed to environmental conservation and therefore promotes environmental initiatives through its SE program.

Tree planting

The company conducted tree planting exercises to support the communities in the operational areas. Tullow Uganda has planted over 100,600 trees in Hoima and Buliisa and further supported the Chimpanzee Sanctuary tree planting campaign in Hoima.
 


Resource efficiency

In addition, resource efficiency activities like the construction of energy saving stoves and briquettes have been promoted in the operational areas.
