Seven year old seeks $50,000 for eye transplant

A Seven year old boy Bill-gates Bugwata who has corneal perforations in both eyes is seeking US$50,000 to undergo surgery in United States (US).

Mulago hospital Ophthalmologist, Dr. Ssali Grace said that Bugwatta is slated to go for Corneal eye transplant at Massachusetts eye and Ear Infirmary Centre in US before March, 19,2012.

“The only solution to restore good sight is for the victim to do corneal transplants, a service which is too expensive and not available in Uganda,” Dr. Ssali said.   A companied by Tinka Nalule and father of the child, Mwaya Ronald, they visited New vision offices on to seek assistance . 

A police officer attached to Mukono police station, Mwaya, said that they have moved in several hospitals in the country seeking treatment for the child, but the situation has become complicated.

 “My son has been on and off the hospital bed since 2008, but he is now losing all the two sights. He cannot see properly at all,”mwaya said. He said that his son halted going to school because he could not read properly what was written on the blackboard.

Mwaya suspect that his son who was first admitted in Mulago hospital in April, 2008 due to symptoms of measles and cough, could have been treated with wrongly drugs.

“During the course of treatment my son reacted to the drugs that were administered to him by doctors. He developed body rash, reddish pimples and burned inflammations of eyes, “he said.

Tinka Nalule one of the Guardians said that the required amount of money is to enable the father and son travel to USA for slated surgery operations. The funds will cover air-ticket, accommodation, and treatment
