RICHARD Mwami marked his victory speech as new chairman of the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) with a request that took the general assembly by surprise.

“If you will allow me, I will take over the role of acting treasurer until we resolve this situation,” Mwami asked after taking over as UCA boss following Saturday’s cricket elective assembly.

The situation in question arose after the race for treasurer between Amos Kyazze and Nicholas Kebba ended in a tie. Both men finished with six votes apiece but there is no legal proviso in the cricket constitution for breaking such a tie so the new executive was left without a treasurer after the polls.

Mwami then inquired if he could take over the role until the gap is filled through the creation of a new article and possibly a re-run. Needless to say, the assembly accepted, with a round of applause.

The hope is Mwami’s sacrificial move is only a sign of things to come and he certainly has all the good will. As matter of fact, Mwami came through unopposed after Shukla Mukesh pulled out of the running at the last minute.

Other members elected to the executive included new organising secretary Denis Musali, women’s representative Jackie Nakito Lutaya (unopposed) and honorary secretary Jackson Kavuma.
