Uganda president Yoweri Museveni has commended the “outstanding role and contribution” of the First Deputy Prime Minister, Eriya Kategaya and the Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, in the founding and development of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

Museveni, also the chairman of the ruling NRM party, while addressing party legislators in a retreat at Kyankwanzi, spoke highly of the efforts of the two historical members in founding and recruiting members for NRM.

A statement issued by State House said that Museveni pointed out that Kategaya, as an internal coordinator from the 1960s, mobilized many people to join the organization until in 1974 when he was exiled and was replaced by Mbabazi.

“Mr. Museveni told the National Resistance Movement Members of Parliament that it is because of the hard work of the two members and the others still living and the deceased historical members of the party that enabled it to grow strong, recruit and widen the membership and be able to retain power,” the State House release quoted Museveni as saying.

The president appealed to the young group of supporters to build on the already cemented foundation to enable the party achieve even more success in the future.

He also asked the members to share among themselves, especially on how to deal with party issues, how to build and deal with the electorate and how to relate with the other organs of the state.

Mbabazi and Kategaya were present as Museveni hailed them during what was dubbed as “the National Resistance Movement Parliamentary caucus social hour” at the retreat.

The social hour coincided with Mbabazi’s 63rd birthday anniversary.

In his remarks, Mbabazi commended the spirit exhibited by the NRM Parliamentary Caucus during the retreat. He said it was such spirit and participation that makes the party “strong and revolutionary and quite determined to transform Uganda from a peasant society to a prosperous country.”
