Pupils of Teryet Primary school might delay starting school after the roof of their primary school block was blown up by heavy winds early this month.

Teryet is about 12km from Kapchorwa town and the school was one of the few found in the sparsely populated district with a poor terrain that hardly supports construction of buildings in most areas of the district.

Now the school authorities are tasked to restore the school building in a fortnight – when the school is expected to open for Term One.

However, they are now divided on whether they should go past the Public Procurement and Disposal Act (PPDA) as a means of achieving this, or go through the procurement system.

The district education officer says the situation has overwhelmed the authorities, as the school is one of the few in the area.

“We have to find a way, though the relocation for the school is set to be done. We need to see that we have structures in place before the new terms starts,” Cheptoyek stressed.

“We want to see that the students get shelter because we are just convincing them to keep in school and we should have a conducive environment for them not to run away from the basic education in life.”

The district authority has agreed to relocate the school to give chance to the sports ministry to construct a National High altitude training centre.
