Kuwait, Egyptian medics lead free surgery at Kibuli Hospital

Over 100 people have received free surgeries at Kibuli Muslim, Hospital in Kampala.

Over 100 people have received free surgeries at Kibuli Muslim, Hospital in Kampala. The 100 were part of the 200 who were screened from various parts of the country over the last two weeks.

Hakim Mutabingwa, aged 47 who had suffered from hernia for over 13 years walked back with a smile after a 45 minute operation conduction by a team of doctors from Cairo University in Egypt and Kuwait.

“I had lost hope of leading a joyous life again due to pain. I am happy that now I am back on my feet once again,” he told New Vision after being discharged on Sunday.

The free surgery camp that opened lasted a week; ending on Saturday was conducted by a team of eight surgeons from Cairo University and Kuwait and supported by an additional 15 doctors from the Association of Surgeons of Ugandan.

 The Kibuli hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Mahmoud El Gazza said: “The surgeons would only operate on 100 patients because they have to travel to Malindi for similar operations.”

He said 80 percent of the operations were conducted on women who had goiter, a swelling of the thyroid glands.

Others especially male patients were screened with hernia, gall stones and appendices. Some women had uterine fibroid.

Prof. Mohamed Youssef the head of the Egyptian delegation told New Vision that they are using Laparoscopic surgical method that involves use of simple infusion.

The free surgery camp was funded by the Arab Medical Union, the Republic of Egypt, Patient Assistance fund Kuwait and Kibuli Muslim hospital.
