Kagonyera installed Makerere Chancellor for a second term

PROFESSOR Mondo Kagonyera on Thursday was installed at Makerere University for the second and last titular term of office.

PROFESSOR Mondo Kagonyera on Thursday was installed at Makerere University for the second and last titular term of office.

He was installed by the Vice President Kiwanuka Ssekandi, flanked by the education minister Jessica Alupo.

The ceremony was also handled by the acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba and his deputies and top managers.  

In an Instrument signed by President Yoweri Museveni on December 22, 2011, Prof. Kagonyera has been given four more years at Chancellor.

It reads, “In the exercise of Powers conferred upon me… I, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, do hereby appoint, Prof George Mondo Kagonyera, Chancellor of Makerere University for a period of four years with effect from October 24, 201, given under my hand and the Public Seal this 22nd day of December 2011.”

The former Chancellor, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi also attended cautioned Kagonyera to help the university in several other fronts, even beyond signed contracted call.

After his installation, he vowed to work for the betterment of Makerere. He thanked the President for the trust vested in him, and asked also asked for the increment of the lecturers’ pay.

The Vice President pledged the continued government support to the university, especially in the science fields.

Kagonyera is the seventh Chancellor in the history of the university. He was selected for appointment in 2008 for the first term. This was after he emerged the best of the available candidates then, who included Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya.

Kagonyera became the second chancellor of the university, who is not a Head of State, following Prof. Nsibambi.
His re-appointment is a concretisation with Makerere. His association with the university started in 1971 as a lecturer, and actively participated in the establishment of the faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

He rose through the ranks to become a prominent academician, until he left in 1998 to take up a ministerial appointment. He returned as the chairperson of the university appointments board from 1993 to 1999.

Outside the university, he served as an MP for Rubabo constituency in Rukungiri and as a Minister for General Duties in the office of the Prime Minister.

The university will hold its 62nd graduation next week.
