PRIMARY Leaving Examinations (PLE) results will be out in two weeks, the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has said.
UNEB Secretary Matthew Bukenya said the results would be ready by January 10. “We fininshed marking before Christmas and are now busy with the final touches,†he told Saturday Vision.
He explained that examiners had started grading pupils according to their performance.
“As soon as this is finished, we shall ask the minister to release the results. We want to enable the ministry to embark on senior one selections as soon as possible and not to delay the opening of S1 classes.â€
He encouraged parents and pupils to exploit the recently-launched service where they can find out their results by SMS.
Under the service, candidates can enter prescribed keywords in their mobile phones, followed by their index numbers. They then send the SMS to the code number 6600 and receive their results. Each SMS will be charged sh500.
UNEB last year recorded the highest number of PLE candidates ever. A total of 516,890 pupils sat for the exams, of whom 1,525 were Sudanese.
This was an increase by 53,259 from 2008. The number of pupils has increased steadily, since the introduction of the free Universal Primary Education scheme. This has seen pupil enrollment increase by 60% in the last 10 years.
However, the increased enrollment has come with a decline in academic standards and an increase in the failure rate. Last year, 89,306 out of 463,631 pupils who sat for PLE failed the exams.
