The Electoral Commission has set Wednesday and Thursday as nomination dates for the by-election of the MP and local council representatives in Budiope constituency in Kamuli district.

The seat fell vacant after Henry Balikowa died in a car accident in November on the Jinja-Kampala road.

There will also be elections for the councillors of Kagulu and Ntala parishes.

Electoral Commission chairman Badru Kiggundu on Friday announced that the nomination will take place at the Budiope county headquarters today at 9.00am.

The commission has also set Wednesday to Sunday as the period for inspection of nomination papers for candidates contesting in the by-election.

Kigundu also warned that no complaints shall be accepted after the expiry of the appointed dates.

According to the guidelines issues by the commission, an MP candidate must be a registered voter and a citizen of Uganda. Public servants who want to contest need to present proof of resignation from the public office.

The commission has limited the number of convoys for a candidate to two vehicles, with a maximum of 10 persons and bearing Police stickers.

Kiggundu said the commission will issue photo-bearing voters cards to people who were registered earlier but had not yet received their cards during the display exercise that ends on January 13.

“The commission encourages all registered voters in Budiope constituency to collect their voter’s cards in person. Nobody shall be allowed to collect a card that does not belong to them,” he said.

Kiggundu, however, did not announce the programme for the Mbale Municipality MP seat, which fell vacant in December, following the resignation of Wilfred Kajeke on July 13.
