THE street jam is not about artistes. It is about dancing. It is not a concert, it is a street party. If you look at all the festivities around town, people led with which artiste was going to perform. We did not advertise any. Our revelers have come to associate us with the party that we are. They never come expecting an all-out kivulu (music show). We want to beat the monotony of doing the same thing.”

That was Elvis Sekyanzi, the Club Silk head honcho’s response to why they had few artistes performing at the two-year Club Silk street jam in front of the Club’s premises in Industrial Area on New Year’s Eve.

Yet, that notwithstanding, the turn up which comprised mainly young people (from high school leavers, university students to young corporates) was considerably bigger than the previous party in April last year.

For the second year running, this UBL-sponsored street jam has avoided big-name artistes, enlisting spur-of-the-moment performances by young up-coming artistes who are popular.

Consequently, the Club Silk street party was just that – a street party. It was a battle in audio and video mixing between Kenyan DJs, Code Red and Club Silk’s own DJs Shiru and Ivan.

WBS TV African Rhythms presenter Dennis Mawanda was the official emcee. The energy and sound that came out of that was the fuel that propelled the revellers’ fun. The music, a mix of everything popular today, was also in plenty.

Artistes performances were spread out and short. Popular new kids on the block GNL Zamba, Cindy and Raba Daba sent the crowd’s adrenaline levels high. Singers Bebe Cool, Michael Ross and Maisha Dancers also performed.

Judging from the average age in attendance, one would say, it was an appropriate choice of artistes.
These young crazy fans started entering the venue as early as 6:00pm; seven hours to the New Year!

We would assume the concert’s policy was not to let in anyone below the age of 18. However, some of the young people in attendance were of questionable age.

This notwithstanding, the fun was full blast! The climax of the party was the stroke of midnight when giant fireworks exploded, causing all sorts of craziness!
