SIX secondary school teachers from Gulu and Amuru districts have travelled to the US for a six-week exchange programme where they will teach in US schools.

The teachers include Robert Odong from Layibi College, Alex Omony from Keyo SS, John Okali from Gulu SS, Geoffrey Ali from Pabbo SS, Lydia Akullu from Sacred Heart and Catherine Auma from Awere Awere SS.

The teachers are part of an exchange programme of Invisible Children (IC) through which more than 10 US teachers taught in local schools in Gulu last term.

Speaking at the send- off from the IC office in Gulu on Monday, John Okali, the team leader said they were excited about the trip adding that it would give them opportunity to learn new teaching skills.

‘‘I am extremely happy about the visit, I have a bag of expectations and new ideas to explore in terms of classroom management, structures and student behaviour,’’ he said.

Ali said the visit would give him the opportunity to manage a smaller classroom as compared  to the over- congested Ugandan classrooms. Akullu said she was nervous about the weather since they are travelling during winter.

‘‘Definitely I am very anxious, I don’t know what I will find out there in terms of cultural differences and weather. And as a teacher, I expect to learn a lot.

“I will share my experience with fellow teachers when I return to my school,’’ she said.
Odong said he was excited to travel in an aeroplane for the first time.

The Schools for Schools (S4S) programme aims at improving the education standard of the war-affected schools in northern Uganda through exchange visits where teachers learn new teaching skills.

Akullu will go to Ridge View H.S, South Carolina, Ali to Capuchino H.S, California, Auma to Martin Luther King Jr. Early College, Colorado, Oryema will be going to Saint Louis University High School, Missouri and Okaali will join Nerinx Hall, Missouri. Omony will go to McClelland H.S., Colorado.
