He stole sweets and chewing gum so he could get arrested and spend New Year’s Eve in jail rather than be with his wife. The 35-year-old Sicilian first went to police on Thursday asking to be arrested because he preferred spending the night in prison rather than with his family, but was rebuffed because he had not committed a crime. He immediately went to a shop next door and threatened the owner with a boxcutter as he grabbed a few sweets and a packet of gum. He was then arrested for robbery.

A woman in Illinois tried to be arrested so she could join her boyfriend in prison on New Year’s Day. Brandi Peterson, 23, came up with a plan to visit her jailed boyfriend outside of the jail’s designated visiting hours. She went to a supermarket and shoplifted $600 (sh1.1m) worth of meat. She was spotted and when police was called, she asked to be arrested so she could meet her boyfriend at the Knox County Jail. She was arrested and detained there but unfortunately, women and men are separated at the jail.
