LOCAL musicians, Douglas Seguya, commonly known as Weasel, and Moses Ssekibogo, who also goes by the name Mozey Radio, have gone into hiding for fear of being jailed.

Mozey and Weasel were on Tuesday committed to prison after they failed to raise sh6m to pay a debt that arose out of their failure to perform in Mbarara in October 2008.

The two, who did not attend court on Tuesday, were sued by Marsta Entertainment and Marketing after they failed to show up for the performance.

The order to commit the two singers to civil prison was made by the Mengo Court magistrate, Jolly Nkore, on Tuesday afternoon. Nkore said in her ruling that their absence from court was an indication of bad faith, given the fact that she had tried to mediate in the matter.

“This is the second time that the judgment debtors are being brought to this court on a warrant of arrest and being released. The debtors have to pay tonight or they are committed to civil prison,” Nkore ruled.

The singers were first arrested on Monday and taken to Mengo Court but were released after depositing a cheque of sh2m and promising to pay the rest the next day, Tuesday. However, they did not appear in court but instead sent their lawyer, Peter Katutsi and their manager, Allan Kiwanuka.

According to the court bailiffs, who began looking for the singers on Tuesday night, the two internationally renowned musicians abandoned their known residence in Makindye and have since kept on changing locations.

“They first went to a lodge in Zaana on Entebbe Road, then to AY Club and then to Kireka,” said a bailiff who declined to be named. By press time, the bailiffs were still pursuing the singers in a cat and mouse chase. “We have the arrest warrant. We are going to arrest them anytime,” the bailiff added.
