UPDF underlined their intentions of winning the national cross country title after their second best team walked off with the Central region cross country championship trophy at Kakungulu Memorial Saturday. The national event is due February 6 in Amuria.
In the absence of UPDF stars Moses Kipsiro, Isaac Kiprop and Simon Ayeko, the defence forces still entered a team that dwarfed all their competitors in the one day event to take the top four positions in the men’s 12km race.
Isaac Yeko clocked 40 minutes, 1.5 seconds to lead UPDF’s Alex Chesakit, David Bushendiah and Edward Tewana to a 1-2-3-4 finish, and the over all title. No team scored points in the women category as both Prisons and UPDF entered less than the mandatory four competitors allowed to score points for a team.
“They were not able to come for the race but they are training hard. We will put up a good show at the national event,†said UPDF’s coach Gordon Ahimbisibwe after the event.
Yeko was happy about the event, saying that it shows how he has improved while Chebet said her pace was slow because she was yet to do speedwork.
“I was concentrating on endurance. I will start working on the speed now,†she said after winning the women’s 6km race.
