THE chairman of the Nkore Cultural Trust, Eng. William Katatumba, has denied allegations that they bribed district councillors from Ankole to support the restoration of the Obugabe (monarchy).

Katatumba said those who supported the Obugabe did so voluntarily because they appreciated the benefits of having a king (Omugabe), which include promoting culture and development.

In a statement issued recently, Katatumba added that the “supporters of Obugabe were not defeated in the recent council meetings of Mbarara and Bushenyi and other districts”. The other districts in the Ankole region are Ntungamo, Isingiro and Kiruhura.

“The Obugabe supporters, who were the majority on those councils, agreed to postpone the discussion on the matter due to pressure from above and for further consultation,” he said.

Addressing Bushenyi district leaders on Sunday, President Yoweri Museveni warned the people agitating for the restoration of Ankole Kingdom to avoid bribery.

He said he had received reports that councillors in the region were bribed to support the restoration. However, Katatumba said the trust and its supporters do not have the means or desire to bribe anybody, adding that they have not received funds from any foreign country.

He also stressed that Prince John Barigye was not agitating for the restoration of the monarchy, adding that it was done by the supporters of the Obugabe.

Katatumba said the restoration of the Obugabe has nothing to do with politics and asked to be allowed to freely consult the masses in the region.

He said when leaders from Ankole met Museveni in Rwakitura in 1993, the Obugabe supporters were intimidated and they did not say anything.
