WITH pizza as one of the most sought after fast foods in Kampala, knowing where to find one that best suits your taste buds remains a mystery, but not for much longer.

Just a week ago, the first pizza tasting competition was held in Naguru.
On the surface, it seems very simple to make a pizza. All one needs is some dough, tomatoes, cheese, a few spices and an oven to bake it. But pizza making is an art, and not a science.

With pizza and food enthusiasts — Yona Wapakhabulo, Prof. Thome Wolfgang, Roger Shillingi and Kadumukasa Kironde II as judges, a list of 11 pizza outlets were to showcase their basic margharita and house favourite pizza.

The judging criteria was hinged on visual appeal, quality of the dough base, cheeses used, tomato base, freshness of ingredients, authenticity in baking process and delivery punctuality.

The contestants included Pizza Italia, Dominos, Café Roma, Mamma Mia, Pizza Inn (Nandos), Pardis, Pizza Connection, I Love New York, Mamba Point Pizzeria, Ciao Bella and Pizza Hot.

The judges demanded margharita pizzas because they are the most authentic and any choice of specialty pizza as per establishment.

As the boxes were opened and our eyes were dramatised with so much pizza, the criteria for judging simply fell in place. “Under the margharita pizza (that only comprises dough, tomato base and mozzarella cheese) for outstanding visual appeal — Mamba Point Ciao Bella and Pizza Connection captured most attention because their pizzas were enticing,” emphasised judge Prof Wolfgang.

For quality of dough, cheeses used and tomato bases, Mamba Point and Ciao Bella pizzas were exceptionally bouncy, while the cheeses too were properly laid onto the pizza hence rating 7-9 out of 10.

Café Roma, Mama Mia had fairly good efforts falling between 4-6 while Pizza Hot, Pizza Connection, Pardis and I Love New York came bottom between 2-5.

Under the specialty pizza, Mamba Point offered a Pollo Chipolo, Pizza Connection - Quatro Stagion, Café Roma, I Love New York, Pizza Italia presented self-titled pizzas, Ciao Bella - Formaggi, Pizza Inn - Mediterranean, Dominos- Deluxe, Pardis - Special Pardis Pizza. Judges found the Pollo Chipolo, Formaggi, Deluxe, Café Roma and the Mediterranean to be the tastiest pizzas.
